Introduction

Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Workshop was established in March 2009, by the grace of almighty Allah, the four Batches has successfully cleared the Diploma of One Year. The Institute has extended the New B.S Programme in Biomedical Engineering from 2012, which consists of Four (04 Years, 8 Semester) as this programme has been started under recognition from Pakistan Engineering Council (P.E.C) and Higher Education Commission (H.E.C).The LUMHS, B.S Biomedical Engineering Programme is one to the most sought after Biomedical Engineering Programme of Pakistan, is unique as its having accreditation from Pakistan Engineering Council (P.E.C).

The Institute also consists of biomedical equipment repair workshop, which is equipped with all essential equipment to repair all kinds of medical equipment. Biomedical Laboratory is designed so that the students can get the knowledge and hands on experience on state of the art Biomedical Equipment. Due to these facilities all students who cleared the Diploma had been adjusted in various hospitals/clinics. The Diploma course consists of One Year Diploma (3 Terms, 4 months each) not only provide education and training in machine but also provide their maintenance.

Biomedical Engineering combines Engineering expertise with medical needs for the enhancement of health care. It is a branch of Engineering in which knowledge and skills are developed and applied to design and solve problems In biology and medicine. Students choose Biomedical Engineering to serve people, along with the excitement of working with living system, and to apply advanced technology to the complex problems of medical care. The Biomedical Engineer is a health care professional, a group that includes Physicians, Nurse and Technicians. Biomedical Engineer may be called upon to design instruments and devices, bring together knowledge from many sources to develop new procedures or carry out research to acquire knowledge needed to solve new problems.

As the Medical Technology is experiencing unprecedented growth and new methods and technologies are evolving to support health care professional to grow and move ahead in their fields. The advancement in medical science and extensive use of electronic system has led the pursuit to widen the scope of learning new disciplines in order to keep pace with ever developing field of medical sciences. The modern hospital is now the centre of a technologically sophisticated healthcare system, and this requires technologically articulate staff. Engineering professionals have become intimately involved in many aspects of medicine, and the discipline of “Biomedical Engineering” has become firmly established due to integration between two discipline, Medicine and Electronic Engineering.

In practice, it involves everything from equipment for diagnosis and patient monitoring through implants such as pacemakers, artificial joints and limbs to the computer simulation of biological functions. All these modern aids to healthcare have to be conceived, designed tested, manufactured, installed, operated, maintained and improved.

Biomedical engineering uses engineering principles to understand, modify and to control biological system. It is an interdisciplinary and applied branch on electronic engineering, which also requires a working knowledge such as physiology, anatomy and biological sciences.

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBHECTIVES FOR BIO-MEDICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGy

The three program educational objectives (PEOS), as gives below, from the basis of the institute of biomedical engineering and technology at LUMHS. The PEOS were formulated in the consultation with the members of faculty and were adapted by the institute of biomedical engineering department during the faculty meeting on the implementation of outcome based education.
Within the period of the graduation, the students with bachelors in biomedical engineering are expected to attain the following objectives:
Ro develop skills to plan for, implement, manage and evaluate Biomedical Systems. And to introduce the theory of different technologies, biomedical engineering systems and the rationale for selecting appropriate engineers suited to the varying engineering contexts.
PEO: 1
Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and create enabling technologies for the improvement of human health sciences.
PEO: 2
Enhance student’s intellectual and analytical abilities in taking initiative and analytical abilities in taking initiative and/or developing innovative ideas for technological and professional growth in the field of Biomedical Engineering.
PEO: 3
Work effectively as a team member or lead multidisciplinary teams while demonstrating the interpersonal and management skills, ethical, social and environmental responsibilities.
