Department of Paediatrics LUMHS Jamshoro - Child Survival with Quality 21st Februarry 2015

Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences  (LUMHS)Jamshoro Sindh Pakistan had started as one of the earliest medical school of Pakistan in 1951. It has now the status of first public sector university of Pakistan since 2001. Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences is a degree awarding institution in Jamshoro, Sindh Pakistan. The University is currently ranked No. 2 in HEC rankings for Medical Universities, offering number of graduate and post graduate courses for Medical and paramedics. Liquate University of Medical & Health Sciences, the first public sector Medical University, has a long history of imparting Medical Education in the region. Liquate University of Medical and Health Sciences is one of renowned Public Medial University awarding Bachelor degrees in Medicine, and Dental sciences, LUMHS also offers range of postgraduates courses with faculty staff specialized in clinical, management and basic sciences subjects to provide care and training. Liaquat University is the pioneer university of Pakistan which has started pre service teaching of IMNCI and other national strategies to its undergraduate. The university is also first to establish a division of MNCH at its campus which collaborates with the MNCH activities of  WHO, Government of Sindh and Pakistan. MNCH Training resource center  has so far trained hundreds of health care providers including public sector doctors, nurses and other health workers in IMNCI,  IMPAC, ENC,IYCF , CMAM and Management of SAM strategies and interventions. These training programs are being run with technical and financial support of WHO and MNCH division government of Sindh.
 University  is also applying to WHO to develop a LUMHS- WHO Collaboration Center for MNCH at Department of Medical Education. University has also applied for a research  grant to establish a LUMHS-WHO  research center for infectious diseases.

Department of Pediatrics (LUMHS)
Liaquat university hospital attached with university is catering for the needs of five million people of adjoining districts. Department is providing patient care and health services to more than one hundred thousand children. Department of Pediatrics LUMHS is also the leader in capacity building of Public and Private sector health care providers in different strategies (IMNCI, ENC, IYCF, and PCPNC) through its center of excellence. It is the hub of post graduate medical education in all important disciplines of medicine. It is teaching undergraduate MBBS students and  training post graduate  students for diplomas and degrees. It is also the hub of pre and post service training of national guidelines, strategies and protocols. Department is pursuing actively the integration of national guidelines in teaching curriculum of students. 

One Day Child Health Symposium:
Department of Paediatrics LUMHS Jamshoro  traditionally holds regular academic and scientific events to highlight the issues of child health and sensitize paediatricians and general practitioners the importance of health promotion, prevention of diseases, rationalization of drug use  and role of counseling to deal with paediatric problems.
Department is holding a one day Paediatrics Symposium this time  on Saturday February 21st at LUMHS Jamshoro.  MNCH Division Government of Sindh, has been always supporting us as partners in organizing the symposium.   WHO  has always been  providing technical support to organize the symposia and  workshops for the participants.
Eminent speakers will talk on current strategies and issues like implementation of  evidence based interventions for neonatal survival and quality of life. For newborn. Prof Abdul Ghaffar Billo will deliver his key note address on this issue.
More than 800 Participants coming from all over the Pakistan, ranging from eminent researchers, renowned faculties of medical colleges/ universities to outstanding Health care providers of Health facilities of Pakistan are expected to attend the symposium.

Objectives, theme and agenda  of the symposium:
Symposium is  being organized in coordination with Department of Health Government of Sindh and its implementing partners. The symposium theme is “Child Health Survival with Quality”. During the symposium new interventions and innovations will be shared by honorable guest speakers encompassing on preventive and curative pediatrics and newborn health.
Prof AG Billo, Prof Iqbal Memon, Prof Yaqoob Qazi, Prof Saifullah Jamro, Prof Junaid Sarfaraz Khan, Prof Khurshid Abbasi, Prof Abdul Hamid Shaikh and Prof Ali Akbar Siyal, Prof Salma Shaikh,  have agreed to talk on a variety of burning issues of Child Health. Issues like  eradication of polio, universal immunization, medical education and child health, female education and child health, psycho social assessment of child and advances in research will be discussed.
Workshops on communication skills for doctors and helping babies breath will be organized.
